Beautiful BVI

31/12/2010 11:53

It is a really cold winter in the Netherlands. Knowing that there is a lot of snow at home makes you enjoy your tropical environment even more. So packed with a bikini, board short and a summer dress I arrived in the BVI (all the rest of the kite equipment was late).  We rent a sailing yacht for two weeks with the four of us to explore the islands. The great thing about the BVI is that the distances are small and the bays, beaches and islands are plenty.

Boards

One day late the boards and kites arrived, so we were really happy... for a moment... And then we saw the damaged board bag with the even more damaged boards. My brand new board had a hole in it and the rail was broken to the core! This can't happen just by a little accident. You need real force to get a strong board damaged like that. So I'm still waiting for the reply of KLM...
(luckily I had more boards with me, so still toys to play with ;-)

Sailing

I love sailing! When I was younger, I sailed a lot with my parents. So it was awesome to have a real sailing holiday after 15 years ;-) You are free to go where you want and just anchor when you see a nice spot. And in the morning, when you wake up, you just change to your bikini and jump over the side and have a nice swim before breakfast.
We didn't had a lot of wind, but enough for sailing. The cool thing is that sailing is also a little training for my course racing. Although the boat isn't fast and the technique is different, the tactics and the feeling of racing is the same. This made that I was battling with hardly any wind with a way bigger yacht for more than two hours! Of course he took over, but no way that he would pass me up wind ;-)

Snorkeling

The under water world is so exciting. All the colorful fishes and coral! We spend hours just watching one fish chasing another, parrot fish who nibble the coral (you can really hear it under water!) and turtles floating around. The most scary thing was the barracuda. We had a big one (over 1 meter long) next to our dinghy. So we put our goggles on and putted our heads just over the side of the dinghy. Wow, just 20 cm away from my goggles! I expected the barracuda to swim away immediately, but he didn't even moved a little! That was the point that I started to be a little frightened, because when a big fish looks so angry and isn't scared at all, then this means that he is probably capable of hurting me. Humm, well, I staid in the dinghy ;-)

Kiting

Unfortunately we didn't had much kite wind. Rolf did a down winder next to the boat one day and we had several other attempts at little beaches, but  we only had a few good kite sessions. Really cool to have a nice freestyle session again! This October I competed in the Dutch freestyle championships and it was the first time since a year I unhooked again ;-) Although the championships didn't really worked out for me this time, it motivated me to do more freestyle again.
And of course, kiting in bikini helps ;-) So we kite all day.

I'm working on a little video of my trip, so hope to show you the results soon! More about our adventures and the kite spots in the BVI will probably be published in the next Dutch kitemagazine.
